I don’t usually do Movie Reviews… I leave this to my friend Sasha Stone of Awards Daily However… This film moved me.

Film Review – One Day (2011) PG-13

 It’s rare that I see a film that moves me… Hmm… Moves Me… Movies. At any rate I was rather bored on a Saturday night and a film seemed to be in order… Having been involved a bit in the film industry I developed kind of an odd attitude towards films and the entertainment industry as a whole… It’s a scam designed to waste your time and I treat it as such so it really doesn’t matter to me what I sit through… Heck I sat all the way through Plan 9 From Outer Space and could care less how bad it was because I was just burning time.

So… I literally pick movies based on the imagery on their poster or cover and this one presented as a rather dynamic image with some interesting color process…” This will do for wasting time, and my wife might even like it”

I didn’t even read this plot synopsis until afterwards:

 “Emma and Dexter meet on the night of their university graduation. We see them every year on the anniversary of that date – July 15th. Emma is smart but success doesn’t come quickly for her, whereas for Dexter, success and women come very easily. Through the years they grow apart as their lives take different directions and they meet other people. But as they grow apart from those other people and their lives start taking opposite directions again, Emma and Dexter find that they belong with each other.”

Pleasantly Surprised

The story is told in one day glimpses, July 15th, of  a 20 year span begging with Emma and Dexter’s meeting on the night of their college graduation in 1988 and follows the development of their relationships through  lives.

The acting is exemplary Anne Hathaway as Emma and Jim Sturgess as Dexter as well as the supporting cast, convey their humanity and emotion down to the most subtle nuances of expression and inflection… Every character was “real” and believable. The film is directed and cut with a skill very rare today indeed, it caught my attention and held it for the full hour and 49 minutes. I assume that the pace of the film could be too slow for many (due to the attention span damage caused by TV) but I found it quite “natural”.

One Day captures and conveys the complexities of a lifelong friendship and  love as it grows both together and apart. The movie made me laugh, squirm on the couch and it made cry.

I’ll go no further than to say this is a must see film… A+
