You Have the Right to Remain Silent… Just like you have the Right to Free speech (provided you are not actually dumb enough to try it).
Don’t Talk to the Police
About the first thing you are going to hear after you’ve been arrested is this:
“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do can and will be held against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.”
Question 1: Do you understand each of these rights I have explained to you?Question 2: Having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to us now?
Not just no, but, “Hells No” should be your answer to #2
And as a mater of fact… Even if the police haven’t said any of this to you (yet) it is probably not in your best interest to say anything then either.
Now it’s important to note here: I am not saying the police aren’t your friend… What I’m saying is that if want to talk to you during the course of an investigation that you could, by any stretch of the imagination, be a suspect in, it’s not in your best interest to say anything… Even “off the record” because if you believe a cop when he or she says “off the record” you are just plain not right in the head… Or at the very least a turnip with some fresh road rash from fallin’ off that there truck.
Now on the other hand, if the police are looking for a bad guy and ask you “which way did he go?” by all means tell them if you know… I’m not telling you “screw the man” I’m telling you… Well here:
I have linked a video presented by a defense lawyer in the first half and a detective that basically backs him up that is well worth the 45 minutes or so spent watching it. If you are not convinced by this just remember:
